But we hae hounds and we can hunt,
And sae the Lord be thankit.

High Country Hounds has been in Flagstaff since 1970, and became a registered pack with the Master of Foxhounds Association in 1979. We maintain a pack of between 25 to 30 foxhounds and use them to chase coyote by scent. We enjoy the thrill of the chase over many square miles of beautiful hunt country surrounding Flagstaff. The hunting season begins in the fall and continues until March, the hounds going out twice weekly, weather permitting. We offer several different options for those who would like to come out and ride with us. Most riders with experience, sensible horses like to ride in the "Field", the main group that follows the huntsman. Jumping panelled fences is sometimes an option, but usually, the country is wide open and our only jumping is over logs and bushes. A good time to come out with us is spring and summer when we take the hounds out for exercise. A young horse will enjoy these outings as they are slow and very casual.

You may be wondering by now, "What's this hound chasing all about?" A nineteenth century writer, Mr.Surtees, may have put it best through the observation of his character, Mr. Jorrocks, "How various are the motives that draw men to fox hunt. Some come to see, other to be seen; some for the ride out, others for the ride home; some for appetites, some for health; some to get away from their wives, and a few to Hunt." Times have changed, but we think you'll find your own reason for "riding to the hounds" with High Country Hounds.
